Passover Part 6: What the Bible Says
Hello Friends! I am happy to welcome you back today to take a look at what information we can get from scripture about the keeping of Passover. If you are concerned as to whether a follower of Yeshua should celebrate, I hope a quick review of Part 2 of this series will help you make your decision. I certainly celebrate! And, if you would like to learn more about how to celebrate, the rest of this series is for YOU!
Let's get our bibles and see what we can learn.
Here is what we learn from Exodus 12
- This is the first month
- On the 10th day select a lamb
- Slaughter it at twilight on the 14th day
- Blood on two doorposts and crossbeam of houses where it will be eaten
- Meat is to be roasted over fire -- not boiled -- and eaten completely or burned
- It is to be eaten with matzot and bitter herbs
- Eat while dressed and with shoes on -- ready to go
- This day is to be a memorial -- Keep it as a feast to YHVH eternally
- Teach it to your children
- Eat matzot for 7 days
- Remove hametz from your houses
- First and 7th days / holy assembly / high sabbaths
Here is what we learn from Leviticus 23
- Present an offering made by fire to YHVH for 7 days
- First month / 14th day / in the evening is Passover
- 15th day is Feast of Matzot to YHVH
- For 7 days eat matzot
- First / 7th days holy convocations -- no regular work
Here is what we learn from Deuteronomy 16
- Month of Aviv (meaning tender / in the ear as in corn / signifies early crops?)
- Sacrifice from the flock of the herd in the place YHVH chooses to make His Name dwell
- Not to eat hametz
- 7 days you are to eat matzot -- the bread of affliction (I bet that is a WHOLE study all in itself!)
- Do this to remember the day when you came out from the land of Egypt
- No meat can be left overnight
- May not sacrifice within your gates (change from the home to a corporate setting)
- Rather, sacrifice at the place YHVH your God chooses to make His Name dwell
- There, you will sacrifice at sunset -- the time of your coming out of Egypt
- Cook and eat at the place YHVH your God chooses. Then you will turn around in the morning and journey home
- 6 days eat matzot
- 7th day solemn assembly -- high sabbath
If you've got your magnifying glass out, you may notice that the commands in Deuteronomy are slightly different. That is due to the fact that by the time of Deuteronomy, Israel had transitioned away from worshipping / sacrificing at the home altar to worshipping / sacrificing at the Tabernacle altar. Thus, you see verbiage about traveling, as Passover became one of the "big three" occasions to travel to "the place of God's choosing" in order to make sacrifices and worship. --This is a FULL study all of its own, as YHVH takes the Levites to be his priests as a ransom for the first born that belong to Him.
So the question that I have been wrestling with is this: where do we worship today? (More on this thought here)
We have no temple, no tabernacle...
But we do have homes.
So...it is in the home that Passover is most likely celebrated, as it has been in my home for the past several years.
Now that we know what the scripture says, how might the keeping of Passover look in your or my home?
So glad you asked! I will be inviting you back soon to talk about that very thing. And when I do, I will be inviting you to...
