The Place of His Choosing: Part 1

Greetings Dear Friends and Readers!  I am going to get right down to business by sharing with you a question I once had…

Should believers be attempting to celebrate YHVH’s appointed times outside of Jerusalem with no physical temple?

A few years ago, I wrestled through this question as I began to prepare for Passover, but truly, it could be asked about the celebration of any of YHVH’s Appointed Times.  (See Leviticus 23 for a quick review).

So where did my question originate?

Reading Deuteronomy.

Look with me now at the following scriptures:

Deuteronomy 16:11; 16:16; 14:23-26; 31:11.

In each of these passages, an emphasis is made that Israel should worship YHVH, “in the place He chooses.”

To many, that immediately calls to mind the temple in Jerusalem.  But has that always been the case?

  • Moses led Israel to celebrate Passover in the Sinai wilderness - Numbers 9:4-5

  • Joshua led Israel to celebrate both Passover and Firstfruits at Gilgal after crossing The Jordan River - Joshua 5:10-11.

  • Inside the borders of Israel, the Tabernacle was first set up “permanently” at Shiloh - Joshua 18:1

  • It remained at Shiloh until around the time of Samuel the prophet - 1 Samuel chapter 1.

  • YHVH destroyed Shiloh (and perhaps the Tabernacle?) due to Israel’s wickedness - Jeremiah 7:12-15.

  • Finally, we see YHVH choose the temple that Solomon built in Jerusalem to make His Name dwell - 1 Kings chapter 8.

But we know that the temple that Solomon built was destroyed around 587BC and that the temple built upon Israel’s return from captivity was destroyed in 70AD.

So…has Israel been left without a temple?

Where is the place of YHVH’s choosing today?

We will look at those questions in depth very soon, when I invite you back to…
