The Two Witnesses: Part 4 - Who Does Not Agree?
I'm back! Last we were together, I left you with a question to roll around. That question was:
Disagreement |
(If you are just finding this series for the first time, that question probably doesn't make any sense. Go back and start here, then I promise it will. :) I'll be right here when you get back).
As a refresher, we are trailing the 2 witnesses of Revelation 11 and Zechariah 4 to understand more about the prophetic fulfillment of Yom Teruah, or the Feast of Trumpets. In comparison to the 2 witnesses needed to confirm the new moon, we can reason that once the two witnesses agree, the fulfillment of this feast can begin (Messiah's return!). So...I think we are looking for 2 witnesses that do not yet agree on something but WILL agree in a future time.
Are you ready to investigate? The theories I presented were:
*Moses and Elijah
*Old Testament/Covenant and New Testament/Covenant
*Judah and Joseph
Let's look at each pair of them:
Moses and Elijah -- These men were both strong prophets and leaders. They are most famously known in a prophetic sense for being present at the transfiguration of Yeshua . In that event, they were both present when YHVH stated that "This is my Son, the One I have chosen. Listen to Him!" Luke 9:35. These men also exercised within their ministries some of the powers that the two witnesses are attributed to have in Revelation 11. For example, Elijah was able to keep the heavens from raining, and Moses was able to turn the Nile into blood. For these reasons, many believe that Moses and Elijah are the two witnesses. Reading this evidence, I am even tempted to think that these men are good candidates. I definitely think that we are meant to connect the information that we are given about the witnesses with these 2 great men of YHVH. But, what must they agree upon? I am not aware of any biblical evidence that would indicate that they or their testimonies were in disagreement. Let us continue on to our other candidates...
Old Testament/Covenant and New Testament/Covenant -- This is quite possibly the most misunderstood pair in the Bible. There are so many misconceptions about the original and new covenants. Let us allow The Word to speak on this topic and define both of these covenants. Following, we can ask the big question of whether or not they agree with one another. We will begin with the "old" or original covenant. We find it sprinkled throughout the first 5 books of the Bible, but I will pull out some defining original covenant verses for us to consider. Exodus chapters 20 through 23 give us a basic outline of the terms of YHVH's covenant with Israel. It begins with the 10 Commandments, follows with examples of applications of those commands, reveals the "big three" feasts of YHVH, and gives directives about the land. In Exodus 24:7-8, we find Israel agreeing to the original covenant and being sprinkled by the blood of the covenant in agreement with YHVH's words.
Many times over the years of my life, I have heard teachers claim that the old or original covenant made with Israel has been "done away with"...that it has been "nailed to the cross" with Messiah. Perhaps you have heard this, too.
Let's see what scripture has to say about the new covenant....
Jeremiah 31 -- We really just need to park here a few minutes and read this whole chapter.
Did you notice this part ? ๐
Behold, days are coming
--it is a declaration of YHVH
when I will make a new covenant
with the house of Israel
and with the house of Judah --
not like the covenant I made
with their fathers
in the day I took them by the hand
to bring them out of the land of Egypt.
For they broke My covenant,
though I was a husband to them.
It is a declaration of YHVH.
But this is the covenant I will make
with the house of Israel after those days
--it is a declaration of YHVH--
I will put my Torah within them.
Yes, I will write it on their heart.
I will be their God
and they will be My people.
This scripture reveals to us that the new covenant is the same as the original covenant.
The only difference is that it is to be written on ๐hearts๐, rather than tablets of stone.
So, we must now ask our question. Do the covenants disagree? I do not believe that the evidence proves any disagreement. Let us move on to our final candidate....
Judah and Joseph -- These guys are brothers. Any of my readers have siblings? It is quite possible that we have found our pair who disagree ๐
Their history is pretty long, so I think they may deserve their own space. I will be back soon to invite you to...
