Israel Part 4: The Mount of Olives
Welcome to a view or two of The Mount of Olives. When visiting Israel, it is easy to see why it is called that. The mountain is covered in olive trees. It is also in close proximity to the temple mount and the city of Jerusalem. It is a mountain that you have heard of within the pages of your Bible.
Abby was impressed to find a camel on the mountain. πͺ
We know that Jesus made many references to the Mount of Olives in the New Testament, and the book of Acts tells us that when the disciples watched the resurrected Jesus go up into heaven, "then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives." (Acts 1:12)
The prophet Zechariah tells us that it is to the Mount of Olives that Jesus will return. "In that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives which lies to the east of Jerusalem" (Zech. 14:4).
This is a picture from the Garden of Gethsemane at the foot of the mountain. Abby and I walked from the top of the mountain down to this garden. It was so steep, that we literally slid several times. It was a very physical journey. Jesus would have been extremely physically fit in order to travel by foot around The Land as He did.
A team member captured this moment for us. Abby and I are standing in the Garden of Gethsemane and that is the eastern wall behind us. Ezekiel 43:2 tells us that, "behold, the glory the God of Israel was coming from the east." Here comes a better view...
This picture was made from the top of the Mount of Olives. You can see the orchard of olive trees that are terraced down the mountain. It is here on this mountain that Jesus will return. His mighty foot will split the mountain, and He will enter into the temple mount from the east. The Muslims have planted a cemetery outside the eastern wall in order to make the area unclean...in an attempt to stop Jesus' return. That gives me hope for the Muslim people...deep down in their hearts, they must believe that Jesus will return. And I know, that no cemetery will stop Him!
We were privileged to be able to actually walk upon the temple mount. While on the mount, I took this picture looking up toward the Mount of Olives. Imagine the site...seeing the foot of Jesus breaking through the clouds and splitting the mountain upon His return!
