THAT Verse

Exodus 14:13
Do you have a favorite Bible verse?  You know, that "go to" verse in times of trouble.  The one that brings you comfort and joy.  Is there a verse you share with others when you walk beside them in their pain.  Has just one verse ever affected you in an eternal way?

That is what I want to talk about today.  THAT verse.

I had read THAT verse many many times before, but isn't that the way of The Holy Spirit?   When He is ready for us to "see" something, we will see.  Until then, our eyes are shielded.  Oh what a happy day it was, when I saw for the first time who really parted the sea for the Exodus crossing!

If you have known me for longer than 5 minutes, you likely know that I am passionate about loving Israel and that I am a student of Biblical Hebrew.  And that is where this treasure begins...

Here is the scene:  The plagues have happened, and Pharaoh has just lost his first born son.  He finally agrees to allow Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt.  Israel and a mixed multitude (Ex 12:38) were urged out of Egypt (Ex 12:33) with the plunder of the land (Ex 12:36).  The text leads us to understand that the Egyptian people were happy to see them go, but there was that little matter of pride: Pharaoh's pride.  We learn that Pharaoh had a change of heart (Ex 14:5) and decided to pursue Israel in order to keep them as slaves in the land of Egypt.  Israel was camped by the sea.  The Egyptian military closed in.  Israel was trapped.

Israel cried out to Moses, and his reply is THAT verse.

"But Moses said to the people, 'Don't be afraid!  Stand still, and see the salvation of Yehovah, which He will perform for you today.  You have seen the Egyptians today, but you will never see them again, ever!'" (Ex 14:13)

What a comforting verse...even in English.  There are definitely times when I need to just stand still and have faith that God is fighting for me.

But in Hebrew...THAT verse is a game changer.

Let me translate one word for you...

"But Moses said to the people, 'Don't be afraid!  Stand still, and see the Jesus of Yehovah, which He will perform for you today...."

Did you catch that?

Here is the "Debbie" translation:  Stand still and watch Jesus part the sea!

Yes!  The Name of Jesus in Hebrew is Yeshua...and Yeshua means salvation!!

Yeshua parted the sea!

Are we surprised by this?  We shouldn't be.  Let's fast forward to the time when the resurrected Jesus was walking the Emmaus Road with some disciples.  Luke 24:27 tells us that, "then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them the things written about Himself in all the scriptures."  My guess is that the parting of the sea was part of that discussion!

Those of us who have been called out of the nations to follow Jesus...Yeshua, the Messiah of Israel, need to understand that He isn't a New Testament (NT) "invention."  Our NT faith is built on the backs of Moses and the Prophets...and they are FULL of Yeshua!

Yeshua is

  • The Parter of the sea! (Ex 14:13)
  • The Passover Lamb (Ex 12:5-14)
  • The Angel who went before Israel in the wilderness (Ex 23:20-23)
  • The Fulfillment of the fiery snake on a pole that healed those who looked upon (Numb 21:8-9 & John 3:14-15)
  • The Prophet that Moses said would be "like me" (Deut 18:15)
  • Wisdom that Yehovah used to found the earth (Jer 51:15, 10:12, Ps 136:5, 1 Cor 1:30, Prov 3:19)
  • Wisdom that calls out "come, eat my bread and drink the wine I have mixed." (Prov 9:1-6, Matt 26:26-28)
  • The Branch of Yehovah that will be beautiful and glorious (Is 4:2)
  • Immanuel born of a virgin (Is 7:14)
  • The "Great Light" that the people walking in darkness will see (Is 9:1)
  • Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, My Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace (Is 9:5)
  • The "Shoot" that "will come forth out of the stem of Jesse" (Is 11:1)
  • The Costly Cornerstone (Is 28:16)
  • The Kinsman Redeemer (Is 43:1)
  • The Man that would be given in exchange for people (Is 43:4)
  • The Man that was disfigured more than any man (Is 52:14)
  • The Man who poured out His soul to death and was counted with transgressors (Is 53:12)
  • The Redeemer who will come to Zion (Is 59:20)
  • The One to who they will bring gold and frankincense (Is 60:6)
  • The Stumbling Block (Jer 6:2)
  • The Living Water (Jer 17:13 and John 4:10)
  • The Righteous Branch raised up for David (Jer 23:5 & 33:15)
  • The One speaking in parables (Ez 21:5)
  • The Horn that will shoot up for the house of Israel (Ez 29:21)
  • The Good Shepherd! (Ez 34:11-24 & John 10:11)
  • The Luxuriant Cypress Tree (Hosea 14:9)
  • The One to be Ruler in Israel...whose goings forth are from old (Micah 5:1)
  • The Suffering Servant (Psalm 22)
  • The Word/Breath that created the heavens and all their hosts (Ps 33:6 & John 1)
  • The One in who all who take refuge will be redeemed! (Ps 23 & John 3:18)
  • The Man who became a joke and a song of the drunkards (Ps 69:9-13)
  • The One who the angels will guard (Ps 91:11-13)
  • He Who has been made known:  Yehovah's Salvation! (Ps 98)
  • The Stone that the builders rejected...that has become the Capstone (Ps 118:22)
  • The Horn He has raised up for His people (Ps 148:14)
  • AND SO MUCH MORE!!!

Friends, this list is not comprehensive.  Jesus/Yeshua is EVERYWHERE in the OT.  He is the fulfillment of hundreds of prophesies.  He is The Promised Messiah of Israel.  He has come once, and

He. Is. Coming. Again.

Do you know Him as The Messiah?  Have you accepted His free gift and asked Him to be Lord of your life?

The evidence is there.  His first advent has been fulfilled.

He. Is. Coming. Again.

"Remember me, Yehovah,
when you show favor to Your People.
Visit me with Your Salvation (Your Jesus/Yeshua)
so I may behold the prosperity
of Your chosen ones,
exult in the joy of Your nation,
and give praise with Your inheritance."

  2. Thank you Debbie! Very well written! There is so much to learn from the Bible: these are excellent scriptures for sharing Christ with the children of Abraham. I wish I could remember it all but I think, when we witness to the lost, God ensures they hear what is most needed. I am downloading your post and saving it! :)
