How's Your Foundation?

Back in the days when we still sang hymns at church, I recall singing a hymn about building my house on Christ the Solid Rock.  Do you remember that one?

On Christ The Solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand...

I can hear it now, and oh how I want my "house" to be built on Christ The Solid Rock!

While reading in Luke 6 today, and I ran across the passage that likely inspired that famous hymn.  Yeshua is teaching, and He notes that a certain group of people are, "like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock.  And when the flood came, the torrent burst against the house but could not shake it, because it had been well built" (v48 TLV).

Boy, I want to be one of those people with a well built house!

So let's find out who the "solid rock group" is by learning who they are not....

"Why do you call Me 'Master, Master' and do not do what I say?" (v46)

Oops...you mean there are some who acknowledge Yeshua as Master yet do not do what He says?  According to Yeshua in this passage, yes!

Verse 49 tells us that "the one who hears yet does not do is like a man who built a house upon land without foundation."  The passage continues to warn us of the house's collapse and destruction.

Collapse and destruction...to come upon some who call Yeshua "Master."  That sounds pretty serious!

So how can we build our "houses" on the foundation of Yeshua, Our Rock, and avoid collapse and destruction?  Yeshua gives us clear instruction in Luke 6, "Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and does them" (v47) is in the "solid rock group."  (underline added)

Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and does them, I will show you what he is like.  He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock (v47-48a).

So, it isn't enough to call Yeshua our Master,
and it isn't enough to hear His Word.
We must hear His Words and DO THEM...

So how can we "hear his words" so that we will know how to "do them?"  We will only "hear" his words by spending time in The Word.

Our generation has the unique privilege of having the complete cannon of the bible within our grasp.  Most of us have multiple copies of the Holy Bible, and many of us have electronic copies that are accessible to us anytime anywhere.

We.  Are.  Without.  Excuse.

Friends, the enemy's greatest plan for your life (yes, satan has a plan for your life) is to distract you from following God's will.  We are not able to follow God's will when we are not hearing and doing His words.  Commit to spending time in His Word every day.  It is an investment in time that will pay dividends throughout all eternity.

Hear and DO today!

  1. I had missed this one, Debbie. This morning what struck me was that we have to “dig deep” to build on a solid foundation. ❤️
