Unleavened Bread Day 5

Tucked within the Passover story and the Feast of Unleavened Bread is a day that was designated as a foreshadow to the resurrection of Jesus Christ long before His earthly birth, life, and sacrificial death. A friend will share with us about that today.

The Feast of Firstfruits

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you come into the land that I give you and reap its harvest, you shall bring the sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest, and he shall wave the sheaf before the Lord, so that you may be accepted. On the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it. (Leviticus 23:9-11ESV)

Once they entered the land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Israel was to present this offering to thank God for His abundant provision.

On the day after the weekly Sabbath following the Passover, the priests in the Temple were preparing to present the sheaf offering to God as the firstfruits offering of the harvest. On the same day, Jesus was raised from the dead. He became the firstfruits for all!

God has abundantly provided eternal life in God’s Kindgom for all His covenantal children through Jesus our Messiah!

But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. (1 Corinthians 15:20 ESV)

Sam Nadler writes,

“As Passover pictures Messiah as the Lamb who was slain, Firstfruits pictures Messiah who was ‘raised up’ as firstfruits, in whom alone those who are asleep will be “made alive.” Firstfruits could not be celebrated apart from Passover; and Messiah’s Resurrection can never be celebrated apart from His Passover sacrifice for us.”*

Israel had been commanded to bring only the best offering as first fruits,

“The best of the firstfruits of your ground you shall bring into the house of the Lord your God.” (Exodus 23:19 ESV)

Jesus served as the ultimate best offering that could be made for us! Through Him our resurrection is secured. Amen!

Prayer points:

Father, we thank you for Your abundant provision for us in the resurrection of Jesus, our Firstfruits of entrance into Your Kingdom.

We pray for Your Holy Spirit to be abundantly poured out to Your people and revival for a harvest of souls for Your Kingdom.
